Louis Vuitton's Cruise 2019 Show Was an Artful Masterpiece

Also, chunky footwear is here to stay.

This Resort season, Louis Vuitton has chosen to host its runway presentation at Fondation Maeght, the private art foundation located in the South of France which houses work by names like Joan Miró and Georges Braque. Designer Nicolas Ghesquière, who recently renewed his contract with Louis Vuitton as its womenswear artistic director, delivered an art-inspired Cruise 2019 show that’s equal parts futuristic and sophisticated.

From cropped outerwear and oversized sleeves, to clashing patterns and rich textures, every look is highlighted by its unexpected proportions and color schemes. After stealing the hearts of the fashion community with the Archlight design, Ghesquière has created even more chunky footwear silhouettes for us to lust over — think thigh-high leather boots in black and gold, high-top kicks and buckled ankle boots with sturdy sole units.

On the accessories side of things, it seems like there’s a coherent theme of “more is more.” We spy visor-like sunglasses, huge silver chains as well as statement earrings that add a little something special to each outfit. Boxy and bucket-shaped handbags in warm-toned hues also bring to mind the perfect vacation. Scroll through the gallery above to take a look at some of the best looks from the catwalk, and head to Vogue for the entire collection.

While you are here, check out our recap of Louis Vuitton’s Les Petits Malle and Objets Nomades exhibition in Hong Kong. The showcase, which features a lineup of lifestyle items from the brand including furniture and home decor, is a must-see for any fan of the storied Parisian fashion house.
