During this July’s couture shows, Demna Gvasalia presented his Resort 2020 collection for Balenciaga. In contrast to the Georgian designers Spring/Summer 2020 collection for the label, the Resort range saw stripped back styling, without the cheekbone prosthetics and bold beauty.
Since Demna arrived at Balenciaga, he’s made the label one of the hottest brands with pieces like the Triple-S sneaker, and for Resort 2020, the designer brings signature Balenciaga elements to the collection. Broad shoulder suits, pajama sets, flowy dresses, bold coats – the list is long, and the range perfectly balances luxury with Gvasalia’s recognizable tongue-in-cheek approach. Throughout the lookbook, we’re seeing heavy use of souvenir-inspired graphics and prints, emblazoning dresses, coats and everything in-between. The unisex tailoring and androgyny of the pieces showcases Balenciaga’s contemporary approach, exploring “power dressing” in more ways than one through structured coats, blazers and more silhouettes.
In addition to the apparel, the Resort 2020 features a big selection of accessories compared to the SS20 runway show. In the lookbook we can see new takes on the label’s “B” logo bags, arriving in small, medium and large versions in multiple hues. Standout pieces include the quilted tote bag as well as the small water bottle bag, ideal for carrying your bottle around and reducing single-use plastic. The collection oozes Demna Gvasalia’s distinct commentary on society and socio-political issues, proving that the designer is taking Balenciaga to a whole new level. For footwear, we’re seeing more flip-flop inspired silhouettes, slippers and sandals, moving away from the label’s previous success in the sneaker department.
