The 2020 Golden Globes Includes No Female Nominations in 4 Huge Categories
Including the Best Director, Best Screenplay, and the two Best Motion Picture categories.
Following the reveal of this year’s Golden Globes nominations, the prestigious awards ceremony has not included any female directors in four major categories: Best Director, Best Screenplay, and the two Best Motion Picture categories. The event has a history of overlooking women, as only five women have ever been in the run for Best Director in the Globes’ 77-year-long history.
Despite being shut out from the four big categories, two female directors earned nominations in the Best Foreign-Language Film, including Lulu Wang and Celine Sciamma. Movies that have earned buzz but were overlooked were Greta Gerwig‘s Little Women, which stars an impressive cast including Timothee Chalamet, Emma Watson, Meryl Streep and more, as well as Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers which brought together Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B and more. Alma Har’el’s Honey Boy, Kasi Lemmons’ Harriet and Melina Matsoukas’ Queen & Slim were also missed out.
The list of nominated directors include Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, Todd Phillips’ Joker, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite and Sam Mendes’ 1917. Take a look at the full Golden Globes 2020 list here.
