Inside Kehlani's Beauty Prep for the Star-Studded Savage X Fenty Presentation
Celebrity hair stylist Kahh Spence walks us through how he perfected the artist’s high ponytail.
New York Fashion Week this season has been filled with buzzy brands, chic street style in addition to striking hair and makeup looks. Since this portion of Fashion Month is known for bringing out head-turning ‘fits, it comes as no surpise that Kehlani is one of the style stars of the week. One of her flyest looks of the past few days was the hair look she donned to Rihanna‘s Savage X Fenty runway show.
Celebrity hairstylist, Kahh Spence worked hand in hand with Kehlani for her ultra-high ponytail for the evening. This hairstyle paired well with her makeup which consisted of a bubblegum pink lip gloss and a smokey eye with purple and grey tones and a dewy glow. Accompanying this beat was an on-trend slip dress in black and a faux fur robe. Kahh shared that he was inspired by Kehlani’s short hair cut.
Read our interview with Kahh below which includes a breakdown of each hair product he used to create Kehlani’s chic hairstyle.
What is the inspiration for Kehlani’s glam tonight for the Savage X Fenty show?
I love a good snatched ponytail and so does Kehlani. We’d been rocking the short cut for a few days, so I thought to switch it up but add a twist. Using my ghd Platinum+ Flat Iron, I added a few flips to the ends of the ponytail.
Kehlani has had a number of stunning hair transformations this New York Fashion Week. Which one of the hairdos was your personal favorite and why?
They were all my favorite but the one that stuck out to me the most was the short cut. I had about 20 minutes to install that wig and cut it, which made me so nervous. As I was working, I kept praying because I needed this to look like perfection, haha. Kehlani looks amazing with shorter hair, so this style was perfect for her, which is why everyone loved it so much.
What are some essential products that you packed in your kit for NYFW?
For a week like this, I pack almost everything because I just never know what may happen. None of the hairstyles were pre-planned, so I didn’t want to leave anything behind. I have a few wigs, bunjee cords, a ton of hair accessories, OGX’s Humidity Blocking Hairspray, Dry Texture Spray and Coconut Oil, a Dyson Supersonic Blowdryer, a ghd Platinum+ Flat Iron and so much more.
What are your best tips for styling baby hair?
Follow the hairline, but don’t do too much. I’ve seen some folks cut their longer hair for fuller baby hairs and I don’t agree with that at all. They should look super subtle and be swooped into the rest of the hair. My favorite product for baby hairs are OGX’s Molding Paste/Flexible Fiber Wax. It applies white but dries clear and matte.
And do you have any pro tips for working with wigs?
The base of the wig needs to be as flat as possible in order for it to lay well. Make sure the lace on the wig is a perfect match to your client’s skin, and if not, add lace tint or their foundation to ensure an exact match. Those two tips are a guarantee for a laid wig.
What are some hair trends we should know for the upcoming fall and winter season?
Some trends for the fall/winter season will be darker hair colors and hair accessories. I’ve noticed during New York Fashion Week, accessories were used at almost every show, and they were used all throughout the summer, so they’ll definitely be trendier throughout the last quarter of the year. I also see darker tones of hair being trendy, especially with it being easier to maintain.
