Lewis Hamilton Tests Positive for COVID-19

The seven-time Formula 1 champion will miss this weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix.

World champion Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has tested positive for COVID-19. According to Hamilton’s team Mercedes, he experienced mild symptoms on November 30, the day after his win at the Bahrain International Circuit.

The professional driver is currently self-isolating and is “devastated” he will miss this weekend’s Formula 1 Sakhir Grand Prix. Hamilton took to Instagram to share the news with his fans and said: “I’m gutted not to be able to race this weekend but my priority is to follow the protocols and advice and protect others.” He continued, “I am really lucky that I feel ok with only mild symptoms. Please look after yourselves out there. You can never be too careful.”

This coming Sunday’s competition will be the first race Hamilton will miss “since his F1 debut at the 2007 season-opening race in Australia,” as per BBC. Reports state that he must return with a negative test “before returning to the paddock,” which puts Hamilton in a tough spot as he might not be able to attend the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi on 13 December.

Sky Sports has reported that George Russell will fill in for the champion this weekend while he recovers. Stay tuned while we wait for further updates on Hamilton’s situation.
