The Sailor Moon Redraw Challenge Is the Latest Trend to Sweep Social Media

Over the past few months of quarantine, several online challenges prompting social media users to get creative have gone viral: first, it was the Pillow Challenge and a few weeks later, the Animal Crossing Art Challenge followed. The latest, it seems, is the resurfaced Sailor Moon Redraw Challenge.
Fans of the classic anime series have taken to social media with their own renditions of the iconic title character. The challenge requires participants to recreate one specific frame from the 125th episode of Sailor Moon S, “Bright Shooting Star! Saturn, and the Messiah.”
The challenge seems to have originated in 2019, when an artist started the Twitter hashtag #sailormoonredraw in Korean. Since then, the trend has expanded across languages and social media platforms, its newfound popularity likely aided by quarantine boredom.
