UPDATE: Gap Cancels Telfar Collaboration
Following speculation surrounding the previously announced partnership.
UPDATE (June 29, 2020): Gap has issued a statement on its previously announced collaboration with Telfar, the status of which was brought into question last week after the retail giant inked a 10-year partnership with Kanye West’s YEEZY.
Business of Fashion reports that Gap offered to pay designer Telfar Clemens and his team a postponement fee for the collaboration, which was put on hold as the coronavirus pandemic intensified. A contract between Gap and Telfar was never signed. As of June 26, Clemens had not yet received said postponement fee.
Following the publication of BoF‘s initial report, a Gap representative told the media outlet that the brand will indeed compensate Clemens and his team. “While we’ve chosen not to move forward with the Gap x Telfar partnership at this time, we’re making whole on our payment regardless and have only respect and appreciation for Telfar’s time and vision,” Gap said.
ORIGINAL STORY (June 26, 2020): Following the announcement of Gap’s newly inked deal with Kanye West’s YEEZY, industry followers are questioning the status of a previously announced collaboration between Gap and Telfar.
Gap and Telfar confirmed a collaboration back in January — the duo even threw a Paris Fashion Week party to celebrate the collection. However, as the coronavirus pandemic began to wreck havoc on the fashion industry, particularly retail, Gap told Business of Fashion that the collaboration was indefinitely postponed.
Business of Fashion also corroborates claims made by fashion call-out account @diet_prada that designer Telfar Clemens and his team have not yet received a 25 percent postponement fee that Gap offered to pay. The publication reports that Gap is “looking into the matter.”
