Nike Celebrates Lunar New Year With Exclusive Footwear Collections
Including festive styles by Converse and Jordan Brand.
Three footwear giants — Nike, Converse and Jordan Brand — have come together to debut an expansive collection of sneakers celebrating Lunar New Year, falling on February 12. All three brands pay homage to the upcoming festivities, which marks the year of the Ox, with design elements referencing three cultural themes: firecrackers (used to ring in the new year), Chinese knot decorations (a tradition dating back to the Ming Dynasty) and flowers (a main attraction of many Lunar New Year fairs).
From Nike, the Dunk Low OG and Dunk Low Disrupt are adorned with graphics referencing firecracker packaging, from boldly colored warning labels to cartoon revelers. The Air Max 2090, Air Zoom SuperRep 2, Kyrie 7 and Blazer Mid ‘77 are stitched with knot-like designs, as well as tongue tags fashioned after temple fair tickets. Lastly, the Air Max Verona and Blazer Mid Rebel arrive in pink and white colorways inspired by peonies (a flower that symbolizes prosperity) and orchids (abundance and luck).
Converse offers three iterations of the classic Chuck 70. One references fireworks with an explosive-decorated patch while another features a patchwork quilted upper. A final colorway arrives in black and red, embossed with a knot-like pattern.
Jordan Brand unveils fresh takes on four silhouettes: the Air Jordan 1 Low OG, Air Jordan 5 Low, Air Jordan 35 and Jordan Delta Breathe. The AJ1 is constructed with a bevy of Lunar New Year-inspired details including a jacquard upper, flower and ox stitching and tasseled laces. Meanwhile, the AJ5 and AJ35 boast wear-away uppers that reveal vibrant designs beneath. Topping off the range, the Jordan Delta Breathe sports a floral blossom print.
Nike’s Lunar New Year offerings began rolling out at the Nike website on January 1. Converse’s celebratory Chuck 70 drops on January 21 and Jordan Brand’s capsule will begin releasing on January 14.
