BTS Wins Artist of the Year at 2021 American Music Awards
The first Asian act to take home the award.
It was a memorable night for BTS, who won the artist of the year award at the American Music Awards Sunday night. The K-pop group made history as the first Asian act to take home the title.
“Nobody could have ever bet on us standing here receiving this award,” RM said during the acceptance speech. “Except y’all, ARMY. Except y’all. Seven boys from Korea, united by a love for music. Met the love and support from all the armies all over the world. This whole thing is a miracle. Seriously, we’ll never take this for granted.”
In addition to winning the artist of the year award, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook took two more awards home — favorite pop duo or group and favorite pop song for their hit “Butter.” They also took the stage twice when they performed “My Universe” with Coldplay and “Butter,” who was originally supposed to be in collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion. Unfortunately, Megan had to opt out of the performance last minute.
“Hotties, I was so excited to go to the AMAs and perform with BTS, but due to an unexpected personal matter, I can no longer attend,” she tweeted on Saturday. “I’m so sad! I really can’t wait to hit the stage with my guys and perform #BTS_Butter real soon!”
