Netflix's Latest Movie 'Space Sweepers' Tops Charts Worldwide
Proving a promising future for Korean sci-fi blockbuster films.
Space Sweepers, the first Korean sci-fi blockbuster movie set in space, landed on Netflix on February 5. The film topped charts in multiple regions around the world following its release.
Starring Song Joongki and Kim Taeri, Space Sweepers illustrates a dystopian world set in 2092. With the Earth becoming an inhabitable place, a large corporation dubbed UTS builds a new home on Mars for select individuals only. Struggling to make money by cleaning up floating debris in space, the Victory Ship’s crew comes across Dorothy, a child robot known to be a highly dangerous weapon.
Originally slated to premiere at cinemas, Space Sweepers released on Netflix instead due to coronavirus-related restrictions. The movie debuted at No. 1 in at least 16 countries including France, Malaysia, Croatia, Korea and the Philippines. The record proves a promising future for the Korean film industry’s venture in sci-fi blockbusters.
