Sabine Marcelis Designs Donut-Shaped Seats for Swedish Brand Hem

The Boa Pouf adds a playful touch to any living space.

Swedish design brand Hem and celebrated Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis have unveiled their first collaboration, the Boa Pouf, a whimsical furniture piece boasting a familiar rounded, donut shape that Marcelis frequently employs in her work.

Reminiscent of Marcelis’ candy-colored donut rings made from leftover resin, a lovely design that the Rotterdam-based designer had sold for charity during holidays past, the Boa Pouf is a bold, plush seat that brings a touch of playfulness to any living space. Available in three color options, namely “Sulfur Yellow,” “Cotton Candy” pink and “Oatmeal” cream, the foam-filled pouf is upholstered in a shape-knit wool that gives it a perfectly smooth and seamless appearance. While it looks soft and sweet, with a wooden core, the design is sturdy enough for multiple people to sit on.

“I have this fascination and love with the donut. It is such a perfectly complete and finite shape that is straightforward but not boring,” Marcelis said in a press release. “I was really lucky that Hem was such a willing partner and Petrus [Palmér, Hem founder and CEO] helped bring my idea of upholstering the Boa Pouf in completely seamless fabric to life, despite the many technical obstacles. We had a lot of fun perfecting the prototype, choosing the colors, and planning how we can expand the straightforward O shape of the Pouf into a wider collection of seating moving forward.”

Retailing at $1,499 USD, the Boa Pouf can be purchased online at the Hem web store.
