Fans Outraged Over Posthumous Aaliyah Album

The highly anticipated posthumous Aaliyah album Unstoppable is set to be released this month, and fans are not happy with the feature list.
Despite having the chance to create a well-rounded collection of songs honoring the iconic ’90s R&B artist, die-hard Aaliyah stans are claiming that the forces behind the late singer’s new music snubbed countless female musicians who are carrying Aaliyah’s legacy forth in their own right.
One fan took to Twitter, writing, “Imagine having the opportunity to create a new Aaliyah album with an entire generation of women that were directly influenced — Ciara, Teyana [Taylor], Tinashe, Normani, Jhené [Aiko], Chloe x Halle, H.E.R. [and] Sevyn [Streeter], but instead we get Snoop Dogg, Ne-Yo, Future, [Chris Brown] and a weird Weeknd song…yikes.”
What lovers of the esteemed songstress are most upset about is the blatant dismissal and continued burial of Aaliyah’s abuse. As a teenager, Aaliyah was preyed on by convicted artist R.Kelly and the album’s inclusion of Chris Brown, who has an extensive record of violence against women disrespects Aaliyah, as well as her countless fans who may have experienced similar abuse.
Unphased by the major backlash, the late singer’s uncle, Barry Hankerson maintains his stance, saying in an interview on The Geno Jones Show that the album will “only get better with people such as Ne-Yo and Snoop Dogg, Future, and Drake — one of her biggest fans.”
Unstoppable is scheduled to be released later this month.
