Hailing from Indonesia, rapper RAMENGVRL recently dropped her first single of the year titled “WHO DIS?” along with an accompanying Y2K-inspired visual directed by Andrea Wijaya.

Signed to Asiatic Records, Warner Music’s new hip-hop label that champions Asian musicians, the 29-year-old artist has been making waves in the Orient’s music scene with her unique approach to rap. On her latest track, RAMENGVRL spits bars over a bass-heavy beat about how her fame has caused people from her past to crawl back into her life for attention. Allowing no room for individuals who don’t contribute to her growth as a person and an artist, RAMENGVRL calls them out and declares how she keeps focused on her success.

Below, we spoke to RAMENGVRL about the message behind “WHO DIS?,” the making of the track’s music video and more.

What message did you want to get across to your listeners with “WHO DIS”?

I want them to acknowledge their worth and stop saying sorry, especially to the people that doubted or bullied them in the past who are now trying to ride on their wave. It’s not cocky, it’s priorities. You’d want to give your time and energy to the people that do care about you and have always been there even before you were on the come up.

Can you share the creative inspiration behind the music video for your new track? What was the experience like shooting it?

It was super fun because I did it with the same team that did “Ain’t No MF” featuring pH-1, with Drea as the director, who eventually also became one of my closest friends. I wanted to do something funny because the process of making the song was just me poking fun anyways. One thing Drea did really well was suggesting that all these “mean girls” now want to look like me, so they wear the same wig and shades and move like me, which was hilarious and on-point.

How would you describe your music style?

Fun, experimental, bad-b*tch-big-d*ck-energy.

Where does your passion for music stem from?

I think it’s because music gave me a platform to express myself. I remember just playing Britney Spears in my room and dancing like crazy. I love the way music makes you feel and its ability to take you to a different world. It’s kind of like dopamine to be honest, and I don’t know about you, but to me, I need the rush.

In what ways do you think your work makes you unique within the hip-hop scene?

I think I’m in my own lane. I’m not like, “Yeah, I’m a female rapper in a male-dominated scene so that makes me unique.” I feel like as casual or as funny as my songs can be, they empower my listeners. Yes, flexing is whatever, but I want the fans to feel like a bad b*tch too every time they play my song in their car or something.
