From feed-in braids to goddess braids, we’ve got you covered on summer styles.

Protective hairstyles are more than just a way to give your tresses a break from the day-to-day wear and tear and maintenance. For Black women and women of color, they’re of cultural significance. Box braids, twists, cornrows and faux locs are just a few of the styles from Black women that are repeatedly reflected in the many ways of today’s culture, paying homage and appreciation to decades of beauty.

These hairstyles aren’t just conditional to a season. Because of the CROWN act, protective styles are celebrated and embraced for all times, reasons and occasions. We spoke to LA-based braid and protective style specialist Evalyn Denis for her scoop on the best protective hairstyles that will be top of mind this summer. “I think we’re going to see a lot of freestyle cornrow braids this season. It all started with the heart design cornrows, and the girlies have been taking it there with all types of designs,” Denis told Hypebae.

When it comes to the styles that a protective style specialist would suggest, Denis advised us that knotless braids, freestyle cornrows, human hair braids, goddess braids and boho braids would be the protective styles she’d recommend for her clients.

To help you choose which styles would best suit you for the summer season, we’ve plucked some of our favorite protective styles from Denis for you to try, no matter what time of year.
