"Tiptails," the Creepy Trend Female Servers Face
Excuse us while we cringe.
Like many people on TikTok, a user took to the app to vent about a questionable experience. To her surprise, she wasn’t the only one enduring this very creepy trend.
As a University of North Florida student, tips are an important part of her income. Being a student also means long hours and in this age of inflation, lots of double shifts. So imagine her surprise when one day, she chose to wear her hair up in pigtails to get it out of the way while working, and she began to be treated differently.
Washington Post, who reported on the story shared, “Regulars who usually never tipped put money in the pizzeria’s tip jar. A few older men winked at Velez, 21, as they dropped in cash. Another man, who Velez guessed was in his 30s, tried to flirt with her for 10 minutes before asking her if she was a high school student.”
And unfortunately, the response to her TikTok was a lot of “same, girl, same.” One TikTok creator documented her journey of trying “tiptails” and “one man gave her a $135 USD tip,” shared the publication. Unfortunately, if you think this might be due to other factors — men are literally pointing out how “cute” the hairstyle is while giving fat tips. Mind you, pigtails are notoriously worn by young children.
“It’s something that you notice, and then you never unsee it,” Velez said. “It drew a lot of attention to the fact that young women are definitely fetishized.”
