Meet Vanessa Cuccia, Founder of Chakrubs, Crystal Sex Toys

Vanessa Cuccia‘s company Chakrubs, a collection of crystal-healing sex toys, came to life in 2010, during a dark period in her sexual journey. At about 25 years old, she was seeking to evolve in her life, as most are during their quarter-life crises. But Cuccia soon realized that she was experiencing a blockage within her sexuality and ultimately felt numb.

Struggling to find the joie de vivre, Cuccia was ready to give up on her journey. ”I had the thought that life is hard and might not get easier,” she told Hypebae. ”But sexual pleasure was something I felt I was entitled to — it was somewhat of a birthright, and the idea that I couldn’t experience that was unacceptable to me any longer.” She eventually had a harsh epiphany that her partner of six years was sexually abusing her, ultimately draining her of her essence. Ready to take her power back, she embarked on a journey of reclaiming her sexuality and began working at Los Angeles sex store, Pleasure Chest.

What followed was a sexual awakening and what could only be described as immense faith in the Universe, that helped her not only heal herself but build a company that more than ten years later, helps women heal themselves and discover pleasure, too.

What inspired you to use crystal sex toys as a mode of pleasure and healing?
What became clear to me over time was that I wasn’t just looking for an orgasm — I was looking to connect with myself on a deep level. I wanted to figure out the purpose of what I had endured on a spiritual level. One night after work, I was a guest at a woman’s house who had a collection of crystals. One was carved in an intricate way, leading me to have the epiphany that crystals can be carved in any shape we want.
The name Chakrubs seemed to be spoken to me from the crystals, and I blurted out my idea to make intimate massagers made from stone. The other guests and hostess looked at me in shock. How could I desecrate such spiritual objects with something as shameful as masturbation? But it didn’t matter. I just had an awakening. It was time for crystals to be recognized for their ability to heal sexual trauma and beyond. My mind went to work the rest of the night while my mouth stayed quiet. My coworkers at The Pleasure Chest were much more supportive of the idea. I spent the next year or so in research and development for what later would be the original shape of Chakrubs.
In your opinion, what has been the most powerful outcome of your journey with Chakrubs?
Chakrubs helped me heal my relationship with sexuality. It helped rectify my past by giving it purpose — for myself and for many others finding healing through these tools and methods. In healing my relationship with sexuality, I’ve been able to come back to who I was energetically before I went through those years of sexual and emotional mishandling. My creativity and devotion to art have been able to thrive, and that is the most powerful thing someone can do for themselves.
What do you hope Chakrubs can provide to its owner?
Chakrubs provides an excuse to seek pleasure. It provides a mission and pathway to healing. Permission to explore oneself without shame. It provides a companion, a conduit to spiritual guidance. I hope that Chakrubs continues to be this magical little object that people find inner discoveries from over and over. Pleasure, self-awareness, beauty.
Are your toys solely for spiritual practice? Or can people use them for play, as well?
Chakrubs are spiritual by nature, but they are simply great sex toys. Many people report their strongest orgasms with Chakrubs, and I’ve had quite a few customers let me know they’ve experienced female ejaculation for the first time with a Chakrub. Because your practice is spiritual and sensual — although some would argue that’s the same thing – are there special rules for using Chakrubs respectfully?

But working with Chakrubs is ultimately a creative and personal practice that is led by you following your intuition and current needs.
Any affirmations or tips to further enhance the experience?
If you don’t know where to start, say this; “I am open to opening.”
This is a powerful affirmation for many practicing with Chakrubs because of the multi-layered meaning in this statement. Being open to energy, to change, to physically opening, to emotionally opening… these are vulnerable and brave affirmations. Imagine saying this to yourself and feeling it in your body as you enter yourself with a Chakrub for the first time. It is a powerful and potent experience like no other.
