adidas and Yohji Yamamoto Introduce Y-3 Atelier

Centered around elevated craftsmanship and innovative design.

Shortly after adidas and Yohji Yamamoto celebrated the 20-year anniversary of their partnership, the design duo are set to launch Y-3 Atelier, a new division of the Y-3 label which centers around the concept of elevated craftsmanship.

The exclusive line seeks to offer a unique narrative arc for each season, drawing on the Japanese phrase “Monozukuri,” which translates to “making things.” Y-3 Atelier will channel the essence of Yamamoto, elevating the existing offering for a new audience. Each piece within the line will be crafted from patterns taken from existing Yamamoto runway pieces, bridging the gap between Y-3 and the designer’s own namesake label.

The first drop sees Yamamoto reimagining classic silhouettes of track tops, skirts, pants and dresses with Three Stripes detailing and his own futuristic vision. “The Three Stripes are so charming and at the same time so strong. In the black, putting three white stripes, it’s very strong. I was excited by that,” explains Yohji Yamamoto in a press release.

To celebrate the launch, Y-3 and adidas teamed up with Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama to capture the first-ever collection at Narukiyo Izakaya, the revered Shibuya-based restaurant. The campaign seeks to highlight the shared values of both entities through monochromatic color palettes and a “desire to find magic in the every day.”
