Rupal Banerjee Drops "Let's Play Outside" Collection
Drawing inspiration from old family photographs and classic Indian films.
Rising designer Rupal Banerjee just dropped Ru by Rupal‘s newest collection, “Let’s Play Outside.” Celebrating the “joy of reconnecting with nature,” the collection hopes to encourage its wearer to prioritize outside life and authentic living, reminding us to stay as playful as we did during our childhoods.
This season’s lookbook and set design offer a contrast between the natural world and online simulation, bridging the gap between the real and the surreal. Starring models Salena Solis and Leena, the lookbook is captured by photographer Sarah Shen with hair and makeup by Diana Mariposa, the vibrant pieces against a natural backdrop of rolling hills.
Drawing on her South Asian heritage, the collection boasts a cinematic feel, taking inspiration from classic Indian films and backdrops. Silhouettes emulate the drapes from traditional Indian garments, with paisley prints and vibrant hues mirroring their embroidery and design. The collection’s red mesh look is directly inspired by the packaging of Kissan jam, a staple in Indian households, while the red and yellow draped dress was born from a photograph of Banerjee’s mother.
“Let’s Play Outside” also marks the debut of Ru by Rupal’s first product design, a belt that doubles as an incense holder, tributing the South Asian rituals and traditions of lighting incense in the home.
