As the New Face of CHEAP MONDAY, Nessa Barrett Is Giving Flowers to Fashion’s Next-Gen
See how she’s celebrating music, youth culture, and self-expression alongside the brand.
After its five-year hiatus, CHEAP MONDAY is making a comeback in one of the most highly anticipated fashion moments this year. All the diehard fans will be glad to know that the Swedish label is picking up right where it left off with the release of a grungy, Y2K-inspired collection focused around its best-selling denim jeans line.
Giving its nostalgic essence a contemporary edge, CHEAP MONDAY has enlisted singer-songwriter Nessa Barrett as the new face of the brand. Known for inspiring a generation of TikTokers with her playful lyrics and equally daring style choices, the certified “gothic princess” is on the nose of what’s hot (and not) in youth culture today. As she continues to inspire self-expression through music, fashion, and other creative forms, she perfectly epitomizes the unapologetic spirit of the brand that it has always stood for since its early days.
For the new relaunch campaign, Barrett fronts the visuals in an eclectic array of “genre-defying” styles such as Sleezie low-rise skinny jeans paired with a studded belt as well as an emo-esque look comprised of the Rad Super wide-leg jeans and a black cropped top.
To find out more, Hypebae caught up with the singer to chat about the CHEAP MONDAY’s revival, her nuanced approach to styling, and why she thinks youth culture is dictating fashion as we know it.
Hypebae: How did it feel to front CHEAP MONDAY’s relaunch? What was your reaction?
Nessa Barrett: I was so excited to be asked to be a part of the relaunch because I love working alongside brands that allow me to be creative with them.
Fashion is in a fun place right now where, for the first time, the younger generation is deciding what is cool or trendy for the masses. I think CHEAP MONDAY is going to resonate with a lot of today’s youth who are looking for bold and unique pieces to express themselves and stand out.
Empowering youth culture is core to the brand’s ethos, how does this align with your own creative vision, particularly your Young Forever album?
I’ve always wanted to be the person that I once needed when I used to feel alone so being able to share my emotions through music that people connect to is the most incredible feeling. As well as this, the impact my art has on culture is the reason behind what I do and throughout this music-making process, I’ve found a new confidence as an artist. I wanted to partner with CHEAP MONDAY because it’s a brand that also thinks like this.
How have you used fashion and beauty to shape your identity as an artist?
I draw inspiration from everything around me. I’m constantly watching new and old films, listening to all kinds of music, and just allowing myself to gravitate toward what makes me feel hot, confident, and most of all, me. Since my latest album contains music that I can dance to as opposed to some of my older, moodier tracks, my fashion and beauty choices have been inspired by the things that make me feel this way.
Tell us a bit about the new CHEAP MONDAY collection. How does it cater to different style tastes?
There truly is something for everyone and I love how diverse it is. I got to play into different characters during the campaign shoot which was so fun. It showcases how the collection is designed to cater to every type of person and style. I can’t wait to see how young fashionistas style this collection.
The range also plays on the popularity of Y2K styles by reintroducing archival pieces from 20 years ago. What are your favorite revival trends right now?
I’ve been loving animal prints on skirts and dresses as well as faux fur jackets. For my makeup, I love a bold lip liner because it gives a distinct ‘90s flair.
What are your favorite pieces from the range?
The Booty Bei jeans in the blue spray colorway are one of my favorite pieces. I love pairing it with the Angel tight printed mini tank to enhance the cute look.
