The North Face and SASHIKO GALS Are Redefining the Nuptse
With a unique, artisanal spin.
Ancient tradition, futuristic tech and wearable art all come together in this fresh cultural collaboration. The North Face Japan partnered with SASHIKO GALS, an artisan collective, transforming the rugged utility of outdoor gear into museum-quality pieces that you can actually wear.
The collaboration is not just about shining a light on the past, but about showcasing Japanese hand-stitching heritage for a more sustainable future. In a historic first, the signature 1992 Nuptse silhouette has been reinterpreted through the lens of a hanten, a traditional winter coat historically worn by the Japanese. The hybrid design features a relaxed, zipless structure while retaining the incredible insulation. For the ultimate power-move in innovation, the BP Nuptse Hanten utilizes Brewed Protein, a lab-grown, petroleum-free fiber from the biotech pioneers at Spiber. It doesn’t just look pretty, but it’s got function too.
To round out the rest of the capsule, you’ll find the BP Nuptse Down Sashiko Booties and heavyweight cotton tees that also feature the signature sashiko thread. Each piece is meticulously hand-stitched, making them all one-of-a-kind artifacts with unique “scars” created by the patterns of the artisan’s needle. This is something truly collectible.
The limited-edition series will be available exclusively from December 27 at The North Face Alter in Harajuku, Tokyo.
