Are Frosted Lips Cool Again?
A certain frosty lipstick is blowing up on TikTok, but beauty fans have a lot to say about the return of the Y2K staple.
On TikTok, beauty nostalgia is rampant. Just recently, users on the platform have become especially obsessed with “Ballerina Shoes,” a frosty pink shade of L’Oreal lipstick. After the coveted lip product began flying off shelves, the skepticism began to set in. While some swear by the lip color, others say it’s another example of a fleeting microtrend that’s bound to be forgotten.
In the late ’90s and early 2000s, frosted lipstick was a popular choice among everyone from Kate Moss to Paris Hilton. Known for its pearlescent, light-reflecting qualities, the Y2K staple became synonymous with beauty tastemakers. Often worn in shades of cool-toned baby pink or more experimental hues of rich gold and icy lavender, frosty lips were once far less controversial than they are now.

While TikTok is known for adding a modern twist to beauty trends of the past, the “Ballerina Shoes” lipstick that’s all over our TikTok feeds is in fact very similar to the frosted lipsticks that frequented the 2000s red carpet. Since its such a far departure from the browny nudes and warm rosy shades we’re used to, some creators are reluctant to fully embrace the trend. Since the shade is a true baby pink, a handful of beauty fans are instead gravitating towards other frosty lipsticks, which are said to better suit a variety of skin tones.

In true TikTok fashion, the beauty trend has become a hot topic of discussion for both fans and critics. “When a lipstick doesn’t look right, it’s the rest of the makeup. Some things need cohesion, you can’t just put on a frosty lipstick and expect it to look good,” one commenter writes. Although 2000s makeup trends like skinny brows and metallic eye shadow have resurfaced on the app, the opposing opinions of frosty lips might be proof that the clean girl era is far from over.
