Did Janelle Monae Win This Year's Met Gala?

Judging by her red carpet and after-party look, we think so.

Janelle Monae‘s custom thom browne Met Gala look is easily one of our favorites of the night. Created by browne and Oscar-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell, the 30s-inspired look consisted of an oversized trompe l’oeil suit cape crafted from mohair, embroidered pinstripe fabric and double duchess silk, complete with grosgrain ribbon outline.

Described by the designer as “a vision grounded in the history of those that came before us,” it’s safe to say that Monae’s look fitted this year’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme oh so perfectly. The look was completed by a deconstructed sport coat and skirt in pinstripe suiting and red wool crepe, along with a black silk corset, white cotton Oxford shirt and striped tie.

Just when we thought Monae couldn’t do any better, she took things up a notch for the PUBLIC Met Gala after-party, which she co-hosted with Doechii. Dressed in a structured mini-skirt suit, the artist continued the trompe l’oeil theme and evolved the pinstriped detailing with a punky top hat, peekaboo corset, nipple pasties and an oversized monocle. Monae completed the playful look with bright white socks and a classic pair of T-bar Mary Janes.
