Bad Bunny Just Made Super Bowl History
As the first artist to perform entirely in Spanish.
Last night, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, performed one of the most historic Super Bowl halftime shows in history. At a time when U.S. ICE agents are destroying lives across the country, this was a moment of joy and celebration. Honoring Latin culture and featuring nods to the star’s Puerto Rican heritage, he became the first male solo Latin artist to perform the halftime show, as well as the first to perform a set entirely in Spanish.
Delivering a historic performance, Bad Bunny also invited surprise guests, including Cardi B, Lady Gaga, Karol G, Pedro Pascal and Jessica Alba. The set featured the traditional casita, which has been the centerpiece of his shows this past year, a garita typical of the fortresses of Old San Juan and Bomba dancers. Lady Gaga wore a custom blue pleated ruffle dress with a flor de maga brooch (the national flower of Puerto Rico) from Luar, a New York-based label helmed by the Dominican designer Raul Lopez. Elsewhere, dancers wore knit pieces by Puerto Rican designer Jomary Segarra, whose label is called Yomas.
While Bad Bunny’s own look could have been any number of luxury designers, the star made a surprising choice and opted for Zara. The all-white look with a cropped jersey and pants tied with a rope was, in fact, made by the global Spanish-based brand that you can find on most high streets. Whether he’s about to announce a collaboration with the label or wanted to wear something accessible to the millions watching, the fit speaks to his ability to bring people together.
