How Much Longer Can Rosé Stay Blonde?
The star has consistently bleached her hair for the last seven years — but is the end in sight?
Since BLACKPINK‘s debut in 2016, Rosé‘s varying hair looks have remained a distinct part of her visual identity. Although the star has experimented with everything from strawberry blonde to cherry red and even chocolate brown for a brief stint, her platinum blonde, which dates all the way back to 2021, has undoubtedly become her signature hair color.
As a natural brunette, Rosé’s ability to commit to such a high-maintenance color has always baffled BLINKS. “She’s gonna be bald soon,” one fan writes in a comment. After her hairstylist Cha Jong Hyun revealed he’s been bleaching her hair every two weeks for the last seven years, the internet began to discuss whether or not she should return to her dark hair.
“No one, and I mean no one, should be bleaching their hair that often,” Emmy-nominated celebrity hairstylist Dior Sovoa tells Hypebae. “Naturally dark, high-density hair is often structurally resilient and can typically withstand more lifting than finer textures, but even then, it takes a massive level of commitment from both the star and the stylist.”
While consistent bleaching will almost always compromise hair health, experts say Rosé’s longstanding platinum blonde is a testament to how successful she truly is. For A-list stars with infinite resources, seven years of blonde upkeep is actually much more attainable than it might seem. “When you’re at that level of stardom, the secret is usually just the sheer amount of professional maintenance and having the best in the business by your side,” Sovoa says.
Beyond that, Rosé is rarely seen with visible dark roots — and when she is, it’s clear that it’s intentionally blended out, rather than the result of untouched, natural hair growth. “When you see someone consistently that blonde with minimal visible regrowth, there are definitely advanced techniques involved,” Samantha Lawrence, celebrity hairstylist and owner of Chromatique Salons, says. “It’s a very intentional, high maintenance look.”
When it comes to the sustainability of Rosé’s blonde, hair experts are divided about whether or not she’ll eventually be forced to revert back to her natural brunette. “From my experience, maintaining that level of blonde long term becomes a balance between aesthetic and hair integrity. For someone like Rosé, as long as the resources and care are there, she can continue, but it’s always a strategic decision behind the scenes,” Lawrence says.
Although there’s no definite way of knowing how much longer Rosé’s blonde will last, Sovoa says there’s two logical routes the star can take, “My best advice, the kind I give when the world is watching, would be to eventually transition to a darker color to let the hair recover. If she is adamant about staying blonde, she should get a custom, high-quality wig.”
