Matières Fécales Sends Unsettling Skin Spikes Down the Runway
The brand is yet again bringing SFX to Paris Fashion Week.
At Matières Fécales‘ Spring/Summer 2027 show at Paris Fashion Week, the label tapped into its affinity for uncanny beauty yet again. Led by SFX artist Catalina Sartor, the looks included smudged eye shadow, the brand’s signature black circle lenses and tons of silver-spiked skin details. Given the show’s theme “The Ninety Nine Percent,” the beauty symbolically echoed the dystopian narrative.
While Matières Fécales’ last collection titled “The One Percent” emphasized the ultra-wealthy elite along with the grotesque visual cues of luxury, this most recent collection strives to do the exact opposite. Instead, the brand is paying homage to the unrepresented majority, in an attempt to spotlight the most overlooked demographic: immigrants and the outsiders of the fashion world. Furthermore, the lineup of models included real life members of the designers’ own community.
When examining the beauty details, it’s clear to see that the brand didn’t stray away from its usual prosthetics and body horror references. However, in addition to motifs like oversized black eyes and dark eye makeup, the models also championed skin spikes, inspired by both religious imagery and punk aesthetics. Harping on the idea of the isolated outsider, the SFX satirically referenced the stereotype of subculture through the lens of the one percent.
