John Elliott Makes Womenswear a Priority at Spring/Summer 2019 Show
Backstage with the designer at New York Fashion Week saw a change in pace.
John Elliott understands that entering into womenswear changes things. The principles stay the same, paced along the same streetwear momentum that powered his burgeoning men’s line, but represent something wholly else when all the nuances that shaped up the women’s collection are taken into consideration.
His inaugural women’s collection debuted during the Fall/Winter 2018 season at New York Fashion Week, with solid yet cautious intentions, comprising padded bombers and gossamer trench coats. His recent Spring/Summer show, inspired by Los Angeles and to which he calls home, saw to a larger emphasis on silhouettes and proportions layered under and over tie dyed silks and sporty French terry sweat. The skate park where the show was presented also stripped away the rigors behind the Fashion Week structure thus letting the John Elliott customer rise.
We caught up with John backstage during show prep to hear about the latest womenswear collection, in his own words.
