5 Things You Need to Know About Chanel's Pre-Fall 2020 Show in Paris
It marked the first Métiers d’Art show designed solely by Virginie Viard.
Chanel‘s yearly Métiers d’Art, or Pre-Fall, show returned to the Grand Palais in Paris for a spectacle of stunning craftsmanship. The show, started in 2002 by the late Karl Lagerfeld, is in part a platform to showcase the work of the specialty couture ateliers Chanel owns, including feather maker Lemarié and embroiderer Maison Lesage.
From the extravagant looks to the celebrities in attendance, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2020 show.
Location
Chanel opted to host its Pre-Fall 2020 show at the opulent Grand Palais, located on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. The location is a favorite of Chanel, having previously served as the backdrop for a bevy of the house’s collections, including its Spring/Summer 2020 show which debuted in October. Though the Palais has been previously transformed into settings including an airplane hangar and brasserie, Creative Director Virginie Viard decided to keep the space luxurious yet simple this time around — camilias, Christmas trees and coromandel screens adorned the hall in a reimagining of Coco Chanel’s apartment.
Collection
The first Métiers d’Arts collection designed entirely by Viard, who was Lagerfeld’s close collaborator for many years, the Pre-Fall collection was full of ’80s references in silhouette and color palette. Strong-shouldered suiting is adorned with gold accents and classic tweeds are updated in technicolor hues reminiscent of the decade. Viard even embraced the recent resurgence of tie dye with multicolor ombré knits and silks.
Beauty
Overseen by makeup artist Lucia Pica, models flaunted a fresh face with metallic-accented eyes as the centerpiece. Gold was applied to the inner corner of the eye, while the rest of the face was kept clean. Some models sported dark purple lips sans eye makeup, while others swapped out metallic eyeshadow for glittery crystals at the inner corner.
Accessories
Chanel’s classic quilted bags made an appearance in coral colorways, along with mini bucket bags and flap bags. The star of the accessories lineup was a small gold chain bag shaped like a bird cage containing a smaller satin drawstring pouch.
Attendance
Celebrities in attendance included Kristen Stewart, Lily-Rose Depp, Margaret Qualley and Penelope Cruz. The show’s casting was also star-studded, with Kaia Gerber, Gigi Hadid and Anna Ewers among the catwalk lineup.
