A lot has changed since the last time we sat down with Amber Liu, when we talked to the artist about her mixtape Rogue Rouge, and what she’s looking forward to about her solo career. Earlier this month, the singer announced that she has officially parted ways with SM Entertainment, the K-pop giant that scouted Amber to become a part of what soon became a mega-successful girl group, f(x).

After spending a decade in the booming industry, Amber, who recently turned 27, is starting afresh with her own music. Titled X, her upcoming album is an intimate record that delves deep into her personal stories and emotions. In the artist’s own words:

“So much has gone on the last ten years I spend a lot of time trying to find the word, phrase to embody my journey up until now. ‘X’ not only marks ten years of my career but it also symbolizes me crossing over into another chapter of my life. It’s a target for where I need to be and also crosses out the things, the people, the bad habits, the past that I need to learn to let go of in order to grow as a person because I tend to dwell so much on things that I end up indirectly hurting myself in the end. I used to and still make lists of things I want to achieve and work on. X, I guess has always just been something in my life.”

features a compilation of six new tracks, as well as a Mandarin version of one of the songs, “Curiosity.” Over the next few months, fans can expect to see music videos for each track, with all visuals directed by and starring none other than Amber herself.

As we wait for the full reveal of the album, check out the first track lifted from X, “Hands Behind My Back,” by watching the video above.
