5 Tips for Buying & Caring for Healthy House Plants
Taking notes from the pros.
If you’re new to being a plant mom, you may have had the experience of bringing your new green companion home only to wind up with brown wilting leaves and shriveled up stems. Good thing HYPEBEAST has tapped experts from Rooted NYC, The Sill and Hot Cactus to give us all the tips on plant care that we need.
A lot of plant care winds down to choosing the right plant. One factor includes knowing the light situation in your home. Natural sunlight is important, and not all plants can handle it if your room doesn’t have bright, direct light. The botany experts also list out some easier beginner plants that you can buy, including cacti, pileas, monsteras, fig trees and birds of paradise plants.
Another key tip is selecting pots. Make sure to check that there is a hole at the bottom of the pot since root rot, which is when the soil at the bottom of the planter is overexposed to water, is the number one reason why plants die. It’s also recommended to re-pot your plants in planters that are one to two inches bigger in diameter to give healthy roots space to grow. Other do’s and don’ts include figuring out how often to water the plant by testing the soil with your fingers, pruning dead leaves and even playing music for your plants.
