Bike Shorts Aren't Going Anywhere — Saint Laurent Dresses BLACKPINK's Rosé in the '80s Staple
The French fashion house revamps the trend for SS21.
Saint Laurent unveiled its Spring/Summer 2021 collection, a nostalgia-inducing range that pieces together the greatest sartorial hits from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. As part of the collection’s virtual rollout, creative director Anthony Vaccarello tapped several celebrities — including BLACKPINK‘s Rosé, Lily Collins and Kaia Gerber — to sport key pieces from the new season, including a pair of bike shorts sure to become a street style hit this summer.
The ’80s staple is revamped in ribbed black fabric, cut with a high-waisted silhouette. Hitting just above the knee, the shorts boast the iconic YSL logo at the hem, adding a touch of subtle branding. Other references to the ’80s, as well as the ’60s and ’70s, appear elsewhere in the collection, which was, interestingly, debuted on a fairly cookie-cutter cast of models. The brand’s decision to omit body types beyond sample size seems like a glaring oversight, especially considering Saint Laurent’s history of fetishizing ultra-thin figures.
