Balenciaga Takes Over a Newsroom In Creepy SS20 Campaign

Reporting on global warming, politics and the solar eclipse.

Balenciaga has released a nightmare-inducing Spring/Summer 2020 campaign video. A team of models clad in the label’s seasonal offerings — including wide-shouldered dresses and Matrix-style sunglasses — take over the newsroom for a network dubbed “BLNCG Live” and wordlessly mouth menacing headlines including “Planets Realign” and “Where Is The Water Going?” The action is set to a haunting electronic soundtrack by Wolf Eyes.

Shots of a solar eclipse, pedestrians crossing the street and water funneling into a black hole-like spillway are interspersed with news anchors reporting remotely. The models’ mouths are animated to imitate speech, an eerie effect compounded by dystopian news items hinting at climate change and the future of politics. A ticker tape of bizarre facts such as “A donkey can see all four of his feet at once” scrolls across the bottom of the screen, imitating a nightly news report. Various shots put key pieces from Balenciaga’s SS20 collection on view, including its Hello Kitty purse and logo shell earrings.
