Netflix's 'Circus of Books' Documentary Goes Behind-The-Scenes of America's Iconic Gay Porn Shop
Watch the full trailer here.
Netflix has unveiled the trailer for its upcoming documentary on the legendary gay bookstore and sex shop, Circus of Books. For those who aren’t familiar with the Los Angeles-based store, Circus of Books has been a space for the LGBTQ+ community to socialize and celebrate themselves without judgment for more than 35 years.
The documentary follows the story of owners Karen and Barry Mason, a straight couple with three children who went to a religious school and were unaware of their parents’ business. Karen and Barry kept the nature of their jobs a secret and told people they merely worked at a bookstore. Eventually, the couple witnessed the dawn of the HIV/AIDS epidemic firsthand and, unfortunately, lost a handful of their employees.
Directed by Rachel Mason, one of Karen and Barry’s children, and executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Circus of Books includes the perspective of RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Alaska, a former employee of the shop. Most notably, the film dives into how Rachel’s parents became America’s biggest distributors of gay porn.
While we wait for Circus of Books to release on Netflix on April 22, watch the full trailer above.
