Jorja Smith Highlights Black Lives Matter Movement in New "Rose Rouge" Video
“We have to continue the conversation around injustices that are and have been inflicted upon Black people all over the world.”
Having released a cover of St Germain’s “Rose Rouge” last month, Jorja Smith has now unveiled an accompanying video highlighting the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States. Visuals feature photos and videos of protestors fighting for racial justice.
Directed by Samona Olanipekun and produced by Aws Al-Jezairy, the video starts off with a quote by W.E.B. Du Bois: “A system cannot fail those it was never meant to protect,” followed by diverse scenes of protests all around the world with fists raised in solidarity. More quotes emerge throughout, from significant individuals who have fought for anti-racism including Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X and James Baldwin.
“We have to continue the conversation around injustices that are and have been inflicted upon Black people all over the world,” Smith shared. “This video is a tribute to all the people who have paved the way for Black empowerment and freedom. We are not going to stay quiet — Black lives matter — they always have,” the video’s director Olanipekun also commented. “The film was an opportunity to highlight the immense effort being made including the strength and the spirit display.”
All proceeds from sales of Jorja Smith’s “Rose Rouge” single release will be donated to Kwanda, a non-profit platform that helps and encourages individuals giving back to Black communities. Watch the full video above.
