Telfar Closes Online Store After Resellers Infiltrate Shopping Bag Restock
“Telfar is for the people. Not bots,” the brand wrote.
Telfar has temporarily shut down its online store after resellers flooded the site, snatching up inventory from the brand’s anticipated Shopping Bag restock.
The Telfar Shopping Bag, otherwise known as the “Bushwick Birkin,” has become a coveted accessory, in part due to its accessible $150 USD price point. As resellers began peddling the bags for prices as high as $700 USD on websites such as Grailed and eBay, critics quickly pointed out the dubious ethical implications of profiting from the accessory, which designer Telfar Clemens priced to be affordable for communities that traditionally don’t have access to quality fashion.
In response to the debacle, Telfar temporarily closed down its online retail operations. An Instagram story posted to the brand’s account reads, “Telfar is for the people. Not bots. Store on ice while we root them out.” Stay tuned as Telfar continues to address the issue.
