'Avatar 2' Offers a First Look at Jake and Neytiri’s Human Son, Spider
The sequel is slated to hit theaters in 2022.
After more than a decade, Avatar returns with its long-awaited sequel, Avatar 2. The second film focuses on family, specifically on Spider, the human child of Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Jake (Sam Worthington).
Revealed by Empire, the sneak peek of the upcoming film shows Spider, portrayed by Jack Champion, slowly emerging from the deep waters of Pandora’s vast jungle. Abandoned at the military base and deemed unfit to return to Earth because of his small size, Neytiri and Jake adopted Spider as their son.
Joining Neytiri and Jake’s mixed-species family is their Na’vi children Neteyam, Lo’al and Tuktirey. In his interview with Empire, the second installment’s producer Jon Landau says, “Jake took him in, but Neytiri always saw him as one of the people who destroyed her home and killed her father so you have all these dynamics playing out.”
While the fantastical film delivers much-needed escapism, it may also be emotional as it touches on relatable themes. Reflecting on movie director James Cameron’s vision, Landau says, “If you look at what Jim does in his movies, he writes in universal themes that are bigger than the genre of any one movie. This time around, we’re taking Jake and Neytiri and building the most universal theme of all around them, which is family. Jake comes from the human world, Neytiri from the Na’vi world. So, they’re like a modern mixed-race couple, raising kids who perhaps feel they don’t belong to one world or another.”
Avatar 2 hits theaters on December 22, 2022. See the sneak peek of Spider below.
