Best of Copenhagen Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2021

Featuring shows from GANNI, ROTATE Birger Christensen, Holzweiler and more.

It is weird to think that it has been a year since COVID-19 dramatically changed our lives, and looking back, physical fashion shows seem to be a thing of the past. As fashion month kicks off in Copenhagen, labels have all been forced to go digital, showcasing their upcoming Fall/Winter 2021 collections through video, photography and other mediums.

Copenhagen Fashion Week has just come to a close, and in case you missed it, we’ve compiled a selection of shows to look back on. With collections from GANNI, Holzweiler, Baum Und Pferdgarten and more, CPHFW proved that not even a pandemic will stop the Danish labels from creating magic.

Take a look at our favorite shows below, and stay tuned as Stockholm Fashion Week kicks off.

ROTATE Birger Christensen

ROTATE Birger Christensen has quickly become one of the most exciting labels in Copenhagen, and it is fronted by co-creative directors Thora Valdimars and Jeanette Madsen. This season, the label takes inspiration from real life and the “dualistic impulses felt during a year spent largely at home: the impulse to dress up and the impulse to dress comfortably.” Drawing inspiration from the ’80s film Cocktail with Tom Cruise, the collection marries elements of comfort and style perfectly.”We wanted this collection to reflect this dualism, dressing both sides of our own personalities: the side that wants to stand out in a crowd, and the side that wants to feel comfortable,” said Thora and Jeanette about the range.

There’s no doubt that GANNI has created its own breed of fashionistas, and for the label’s Fall/Winter 2021 show dubbed GANNI LOVE FOREVER, it incorporates its community. Sending out GANNI branded pizza and wine to friends of the brand to watch the show together, as well as putting on a virtual concert, the label managed to turn a digital show into a physical event (from the comfort of our own homes, of course).

The collection captured GANNI’s feminite, yet sometimes boy-ish touch, featuring oversized tailoring, trousers and boots. Of course, we saw a wide range of materials including leather and ruched silk, as well as bold colors like blue, green and yellow dominate the collection.

Holzweiler

Capturing the Scandinavian nature, Holzweiler put on a show by the water. Dubbed “Twist,” the Fall/Winter 2021 collection showcases the brand’s love for elevated minimalism, showing classic tailoring as well as experimental pieces. As for the color palette, a muted and nature-inspired range of colors shine through, including tones of grey, brown and beige throughout. We also see a pop of red and blue, perfectly woven into the collection. Playing with materials such as puffer jackets, shearling skirts and patent leather, the range sees dimension and a playful touch, which captures the label’s inspiration, Twist. “For the AW21 collection we have focused on honest garments with a classic twist. Oversized and loose minimalistic shapes. Details with a twist or glitches. We look at fabrics to create new techniques and classic innovation,” Holzweiler describes. Throughout the collection echoes the brand’s most important message this season: The world is changing, so must we.

Marimekko

Coming in with a focus on sustainability, Marimekko debuted the film The Art of Print and Shape, sharing the essence and core of the brand and its minimal environmental impact. Having recently released 2025 sustainability targets, Marimekko aims to reduce its environmental impact. “It was important for us that the carbon footprint from the film’s production will be offset,” the label explains. “The film is a seasonless tribute to prints on shapes, powerful self-expression and creative collaboration.”

Marimekko was also awarded second place in the Zalando Sustainability Awards, recognizing the label’s long-standing journey and ongoing conversation around sustainability within fashion.

Soulland

Soulland also opted for a runway show, dubbed “THE BOOK VOL.001 – CHAPTER 6: TIME, OUR TYRANT!” “As humans, we are obsessed with the concept of time. It is a powerful structure in your life that you can’t control. A lot of the things we do as humans is based on our misplaced conception of how to manipulate and control time. The collection and the world we live in is about accepting that we can’t control everything,” explains creative director Silas Adler.

The collection itself takes on classic design cues like sleek tailoring and suiting, but takes a casual approach to the fit and materials. Everyday pieces like cozy long sleeves are paired with chic slip dresses, and dress shirts are paired with bomber jackets and trousers.

Baum Und Pferdgarten

For Fall/Winter 2021, Baum und Pferdgarten tapped the #BaumFamily to model the new collection. Ranging from outerwear to suits, the collection features the label’s classic mixing and matching of colors and patterns to create an exciting and playful aesthetic.
