New Study Shows Regular Masturbation Can Help Reduce Period Pain

Another reason to embrace self-pleasure.

Sex toy brand Womanizer has revealed the findings of a three-month-long study on masturbation and menstruation. Conducted in partnership with menstrual cup maker Lunette, the study enlisted 486 people who menstruate to explore the effects of masturbation on period pain.

Over the course of three months, participants with period symptoms including cramps, bloating and breast sensitivity swapped out painkillers for masturbation. 70 percent of participants reported that regular masturbation helped reduce their pain, and a whopping 90 percent said they would recommend masturbation as a method of period pain management to a friend. 85 percent plan to continue masturbating on a routine basis.

The study’s findings are rooted in science — orgasms help reduce cramps and other forms of pain as they cause the body to release endorphins, hormones that induce euphoria and relaxation. Of course, some are still hesitant to embrace the link between masturbation and menstruation due to deeply entrenched stigma surrounding both self-pleasure and periods. Womanizer and Lunette hope their “menstrubation” findings will help break down these taboos.

Head to the study’s website and check out the video above to learn more. In case you missed it, here’s everything you need to know about period sex.
