Zayn Malik Slams Grammy Awards on Twitter

The singer criticized the nomination process for fostering favoritism and racism.

Zayn Malik has some choice words for the Grammy Awards, set to air this Sunday, March 14. The solo artist and former One Direction member took to Twitter to express his frustration with the Recording Academy: “Fuck the grammys and everyone associated,” he wrote. “Unless you shake hands and send gifts, there’s no nomination considerations. Next year I’ll send you a basket of confectionary.”

Social media users quickly speculated that Malik’s tweet was a dig against Harry Styles, who received three Grammy nods this year. Others wondered whether Malik was upset that his latest album, No One Is Listening, was ineligible for nomination (it released three months after the window for consideration closed). He clarified his intentions with a follow-up post. “My tweet was not personal or about eligibility but was about the need for inclusion and the lack of transparency of the nomination process,” he posted, adding that the Grammys allows “favoritism and racism,” as well as politics, to influence the voting process.
