Willow Smith Opens Up About Polyamory on 'Red Table Talk'

The singer discusses why the practice works for her.

Willow Smith revealed she is polyamorous on the latest episode of Red Table Talk, Jada Pinkett Smith‘s thought-provoking Facebook Watch talk show. The singer, who expressed interest in a “polyfidelitous” relationship in 2019, opened up to her mother and grandmother, Adrienne “Gammy” Banfield-Norris, about what the practice means to her.

Polyamory, or consensual non-monogamy, is defined as having more than one romantic relationship at the same time, with the full knowledge of all partners involved. “I feel the main foundation [of polyamory] is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that’s what everyone around you says it’s the right thing to do,” Willow explained.

Her mother responded positively: “Wanting to set up your life in a way that you can have what it is that you want, I think anything goes as long as the intentions are clear,” Jada mother said. Gammy expressed that the practice of polyamory “feels like it’s really all just centered around sex.” Willow dispelled that misconception, describing herself as the person in her friend group who has the least sex. “I was introduced to [polyamory] in a nonsexual way,” she said. “Let’s say you haven’t always been the kind of person that wanted to have sex all the time but your partner is. Are you going to be the person that says, ‘just because I don’t have these needs you can’t have them either’?”
