An essential style for every sneaker rotation.
If you are just starting to build your own sneaker collection, one classic shoe you’ll certainly want to get your feet on is the New Balance 990, a silhouette that perfectly combines style and comfort. I guess you could say I was stuck in my comfort zone (that being Nike and adidas kicks), and had honestly never considered owning a pair of New Balances before. However, when the 990v5 model began to constantly pop up on my Instagram feed, I wanted to see for myself what the hype was all about.
I went for the popular “Grey/Castlerock” colorway — it’s got the perfect shade of gray that isn’t too light or too dark for my casual, everyday fits. Read on for my full review of the iconic sneaker and why it has become my go-to footwear.

THE SHOE: New Balance 990v5 “Grey/Castlerock”
OUR REVIEW: The original New Balance 990 released about 40 years ago and its design has evolved over time, with an upgraded sixth iteration set to drop in 2022. The v5, in my opinion, is the most structurally sleek take on the footwear style.
Carrying over elements from the v4, the shoe’s upper is crafted from premium pig suede and mesh. The ankle collar is updated with rubber detailing, and the silhouette is equipped with a TPU power strap and an Ortholite insert for optimal cushioning. Other standout details include the revamped motifs on the tongue and the reflective effect on the lateral “N” logo, the toe and the heel. Rounding out the design are the white laces and a supportive ENCAP midsole.
Specific construction details aside, the 990s are by far the most comfortable and versatile pair of sneakers I own. I use them almost every time I’m out. Most of the clothes in my wardrobe are in black, white and neutral tones, and the 990v5 always go well with my outfits. Whether you’re on a date or going out for a girls’ night, these wearable kicks will give you that effortless, stylish look.
One thing to note is that these shoes do run half a size smaller than your regular size (I usually wear size US 8, but US 8.5 fits better in this case), so make sure you gather the correct measurements before purchasing a pair online.
