Cue “Ice Me Out” by Kash Doll.
Ahead of Valentine’s Day, preowned watch specialist Watchfinder is taking us for a walk down memory lane with some celebrity timepiece history. Icons from Beyoncé to Elizabeth Taylor have all shared the gifts of romance and custom jewels with their lovers. Below, read some of our favorite stories of love topped off with expensive luxury watches.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z: Hublot Big Bang
For Jay-Z‘s 43rd birthday, Beyoncé gifted him a $5 million USD Hublot Big Bang — the most expensive Hublot ever made. It’s covered with over 1,200 diamonds that are of the highest grade. In total, this custom took 14 months to create.
Marilyn Monroe and John F. Kennedy: Rolex Day-Date
The iconic moment when Marilyn Monroe sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to JFK raised decades of rumors about whether the two were romantically involved. The affair between the two was mere speculation, and so was the alleged engraved gold Rolex Day-Date Monroe apparently gifted JFK on that same birthday. That was until the alleged engraved watch turned up years later at an auction and sold for $120,000 USD, leaving people in awe. The inscription reads, “JACK, with love as always from MARILYN, May 29th 1962.”
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton: Omega Constellation
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were an iconic couple of the 20th century, and their love was so enduring that they actually married twice in their lifetime. To commemorate Burton’s CBE awarded by the Queen, Taylor added some drip to Burton’s watch collection. She was an avid collector herself, owning pieces from brands like Cartier, BVLGARI, Patek Philippe and Piaget. The gift was a gold Omega Constellation watch “which featured a square dial and an 18-carat yellow gold case and bracelet,” Watchfinder shares.
Prince William and Kate Middleton: Cartier Ballon Bleu
For their third wedding anniversary, Prince William gifted his wife a Cartier Ballon Bleu. “The watch featured a stainless-steel bracelet, blued-steel hands and a blue spinel set into the crown,” Watchfinder reveals. The piece paid homage to his mother, Princess Diana, who was an avid lover of Cartier watches.
