How Black Women Are Ditching the Dating Rulebook

According to the BLK dating app’s latest survey.

Leading dating app for Black folx, BLK, reveals dating trends amongst Gen Z Black women.

For Black women, not feeling safe in America is no secret. However, these stats also translate into the dating app experience with 66% of Gen Z women not feeling safe on mainstream dating apps. Thankfully, 78% feel safer on BLK.

As for finances and love, BLK’s stats reflect a different story than social media’s constant debates. 73% of women are looking for long-term relationships, with “good communication” and “trust” cited as the most important qualities. However, in the case of finances, 82% of women would “date someone long-term who made less money than them,” putting the splitting bills conversation to rest.

Surprisingly, Black women are no longer swayed by partners who describe themselves as “ambitious, determined,” or “resourceful,” BLK states. “Black women have historically been discriminated against in the workplace, and have had fewer opportunities to advance their careers. This can make them less likely to value ambition or determination in themselves, because these traits may not always lead to success.”

However, the biggest issue for BLK’s users is “finding someone who shares their cultural experiences and values.” Due to women of color having a unique experience regarding racism, a partner who understands this and provides support is non-negotiable. On a worse note, 73% of Gen Z Black women “feel they have to work harder than other races to be seen as attractive when dating, highlighting the impact of societal beauty standards on individuals’ self-perception and confidence.”

Lastly, a small few — exactly — 16% of black women on BLK are seeking friendship. So, for those of you prioritizing community, in hope of finding your singles tribe, BLK may be a good match for you.

In other news, Berlin is happily freeing the nipple for women and nonbinary folx.
