"Duck Nails" Are the Unexpected Trend That Embraces the Movement of Intentional Ugliness

Love them or hate them, the style is marking its mark.

Let’s face it, nail trends will always reign supreme. It may take time to embrace the latest hair and makeup fads, but the girls will step each time when it comes to a fresh manicure. From “Glazed donut” nails to TikTok‘s “Red nail theory” and “Vanilla Chrome” nails — the looks to try are in full abundance. However, the most recent one taking center stage on social media’s FYPs caught us off guard. Are we ready to take on “Duck Nails?”

Shaped in the form of the beloved cartoon character Daffy Duck’s feet, flared nails are nothing new, but they’re new for 2023. As a diss to the traditional nail shape, the style extends out from the end of the finger instead of cutting off in a tapered and more visually appealing way. One could possibly say that this trend is ugly AF, but I like to think of “Duck Nails” as the wave of the Balenciaga dad sneaker that hit the scene around 2016-17ish. They’re not for you until they’re for you.

“Duck Nails” are usually unnecessarily clunky and are far from prim, proper or polished. This look is for the daring, the person that frankly doesn’t give a sh-t about what anyone has to say about them — because with this style of nails, how dare you?

We haven’t seen many celebs embracing this trend yet, but leave it to Lizzo to flaunt “Duck Nails” effortlessly on her TikTok. Life’s short, so why not do what you want with your nails? After her statement of letting us know that she is in fact the beauty standard, intentional ugliness is very much on brand and supports her theory. After all, it’s not a “trend,” no matter how beautiful or undesirable it is until someone else is copying you.

If you’re interested in giving “Duck Nails” a go, we’ve listed a view inspo photos ahead to bookmark. If the look works out for you, hit up Hypebae’s Beauty IG for a chance to be featured.
