This Indian Brand Just Made Its London Fashion Week Debut
Introducing Lovebirds.
Indian brand Lovebirds just made its London Fashion Week debut, and it was possibly one of the most important debuts of the season.
Titled “India: IYKYK,” the showcase aimed to interrogate the one-sided version of India that’s often presented to us, one drenched in “marigolds and spices and elephants,” and instead celebrate what it actually is for the people who call it home.
In the collection’s accompanying press release, co-founder Amrita Khanna explains, “It is not the India we are introducing to the world; it’s the India we already know. We are just looking at it through the contemporary fashion lens.”
Showcasing Indian craftsmanship through a contemporary lens, the collection revolved around the use of “Chintz” fabric. As described by the brand as “a cloth with a long history of leaving India and coming back altered,” SS27’s version of the fabric came in the form of black and white trousers, draped shirts and blouses. Elsewhere, vivacious colors like neon greens and bright pinks reminded us of the vibrancy of the region, worn alongside sculptural gowns, printed skirts and intricate embroidery.
Going beyond the tropes and the stereotypes, this is India, according to Lovebirds.
