BAFTA 2020 Nominations Criticized for Only Including White Actors

And for the seventh year in a row, no female directors were nominated.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has come under fire for its choice of 2020 BAFTA Awards nominees. As pointed out by public figures including Edward Enninful and BAFTA’s very own Chief Executive Amanda Berry, this year’s nominations only include white actors in the categories for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. The Best Director category is free of female directors for the seventh year in a row.

Despite critically acclaimed performances in HarrietHustlers and Us, Cynthia Erivo, Jennifer Lopez and Lupita Nyong’o did not receive nominations. Dev Patel and Eddie Murphy, who starred in The Personal History of David Copperfield and Dolomite Is My Name respectively, were also overlooked. Lastly, Greta Gerwig was excluded from Best Director nominations despite the success of her Little Women remake.

The 2020 BAFTA Awards will take place on February 2. Keep reading for the full list of nominations.
