Nike's 2020 Chinese New Year Advert Is Both Funny and Moving
Running away from your family has never felt so real.
Nike has released a short 90-second ad for the upcoming 2020 Chinese New Year depicting a Chinese aunt red-envelope tussle, one that generally occurs between friends and family during the festive time of the year. The comic ongoing battle eventually results in a cross-country sprint in which the aunt chases her Nike-trainer-wearing-niece across open land. It’s a pretty original concept coming from the Swoosh.
The ad, created by Wieden+Kennedy Shanghai, kicks off by showing a young girl being offered a red envelope by her aunt having already been told to refuse it out of politeness by her mother. This narrative continues for several years. Fast-forward, a number of times, and we watch the girl continuously attempt – and at times succeed – to avoid her auntie’s envelope in the most comic ways possible.
Near the end, the aunt catches up to her niece and the red envelope is accepted, yet a complete role reversal occurs. When the time comes for the now-grown niece to offer a red envelope to her aunt, she learns that her senior has taken lessons from her own past tricks: her aunt turns up to her home prepared, wearing Nike sneakers… and so the chase begins.
