Grace Jones Exhibition to Open at Nottingham Contemporary in the UK
Titled ‘Grace Before Jones: Camera, Disco, Studio.’
Nottingham Contemporary has announced an upcoming exhibition on legendary model and performer Grace Jones. Described by the museum as a “cross between fan-fiction, study and biography,” Grace Before Jones: Camera, Disco, Studio focuses on Jones’ impact on Black image-making, gender binarism and the genre of performance.
Exploring her work as a runway model and nightclub performer, as well as the duality of her Jamaican-French identity and masculine-feminine presentation, the show embraces Jones’ rejection of binary systems and presents a multifaceted portrait of the icon. Curated by Cédric Fauq and Olivia Aherne, the exhibit will include work by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Robert Mapplethorpe, Antonio Lopez and more.
Grace Before Jones: Camera, Disco, Studio opens at Nottingham Contemporary September 26 and runs through January 3, 2021. These dates are subject to change due to the coronavirus pandemic.
