Do We Really Need a 'Powerpuff Girls' Live-Action Series Reboot?
Here’s how fans are reacting to the announcement.
Among the many reboots that have been announced since last year, another live-action adaptation of a ’90s childhood classic is currently in development at The CW – The Powerpuff Girls. Made out of sugar, spice and everything nice with “chemical X,” Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup will be the main characters of the remake and are described as “disillusioned 20-somethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting,” according to Variety.
Greg Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television are set to produce, who are also behind Riverdale. The original TV show was originally created by Craig McCracken and ran for six seasons between 1998 and 2005 on Cartoon Network. In 2016, a rebooted animated series also aired on Cartoon Network but only lasted for two seasons.
However, fans have mixed thoughts with this upcoming live-action remake. “No one and I mean absolutely no one has watched The Powerpuff Girls and thought, ‘Hmmm it would be even better as a live-action series,’” one fan tweeted. “I just know they are gonna age up the characters to make it more ‘mature’ and dark… Leave the babies alone.”
Another user pointed out that the show’s animation is a crucial factor, while someone else said: “Live action Powerpuff Girls sounds like it kinda misses the point of hyper-stylized homages to cartoons, comics, and anime, though I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t kill a man to produce a high school timeskip series.”
The CW has yet to announce who will be portraying the trio, their father Professor Utonium and arch nemesis Mojo Jojo. Stay tuned while we wait for more official details and let us know what you think of the reboot in the comments.
