JW Anderson's SS21 Collection Lets You Create Your Own Show
Presented as “a show in a box.”
For Spring/Summer 2021, brands have been forced to get creative when it comes to showing their collections. As the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the world over the past few months, restrictions that limit the possibilities for shows, travel and events have been enforced, meaning that fashion week is unlike anything we’ve experienced before. For Jonathan Anderson, it was an opportunity to get creative.
Presenting his SS21 collection for JW Anderson as a “show in a box,” the designer’s eponymous label sent boxes with a bound book inside, that included different types of paper, photos, colored sheets as well as the full lookbook. With a brass coin featured on the front, the fastenings holding the book together could be removed to unveil the deconstructed experience, allowing the viewer to physically create their own show and build their own installation. “[It] is a celebration of fashion at its most frivolous, embellished, poetic; escapist and liberating, even. The outburst of lightness – both metaphorical and real – is framed within the classic sense of poise and elegance which has become a JW Anderson signature,” states the press release.
The collection features recognizable Jonathan Anderson design cues, such as unconventional shapes combined with traditional pieces like suits and blazers, as well as colorful jacquards, jewels and more eye-catching detalining throughout. Playing with color and texture, Anderson manages to create an expressive and eclectic way of dressing, without making it seem too over-the-top crazy.
As for accessories, chunky boots with a metallic zip down the front take centerstage, with big, dangly earrings following closely behind. The house’s signature Chain Loafers are also on display, as well as summery strappy sandals.
