Gone are the days of dance challenges and mouth-watering cooking clips — TikTok users are pivoting to a surprising new genre: deep-cleaning videos. The unexpected trend is climbing the ranks of the short form video platform under the hashtag #CleanTok, which currently boasts 7.9 billion views.
Accounts dedicated to deep-cleaning, as well as those dabbling in the practice, are captivating millions of users with “Clean With Me” videos, clips that invite viewers to ogle the creator’s cleaning process and the transformation of a space from grimy to pristine. The posts often include cleaning hacks and product recommendations, too. One that recently gained traction was “laundry stripping,” a method for removing detergent buildup from clothes (experts, however, say the fad doesn’t do much for the cleanliness of your laundry).
TikTok’s deep-cleaning videos, which often document nauseating shots of pre-clean filth, mirror the gross-yet-satisfying nature of pimple popping videos, also popular on on the platform. In the age of coronavirus, #CleanTok is especially relevant, as users far and wide are acutely aware of the need for sanitized spaces. And, as we continue to weather quarantine, the genre provides ample fodder for those looking to do a deep-clean of their own.
